SoundCloud July News: Samples, Apps and Much More

SoundCloud Newsletter 01 July, 2010

Hi there, Audio!

In This Issue:

  • Stop. Sample time! Help build a huge Creative Commons Library

People are uploading more and more reusable samples and we're really excited about the potential this brings. Our hope is to see more interesting collaborations and creative use of the content available. Bring your talents as a beat creator, field recorder, sound designer, guitar shredder or vocalist and get involved in the creative commons community by sharing your sounds. We just pushed a blog post featuring some users like Groove Criminals, Calvin Cardioid as well as a few SoundCloud groups that have some fresh new sounds waiting for you.

  • Featured Apps: energyXT, Flavors and Mixlr

energyXT is a lightweight yet powerful desktop app for music production that runs on Mac OS, Windows, and Linux. Except for standard features like VST support, the app lets you export your creations directly to your SoundCloud account, making it a great tool for collaboration, sample uploads, etc. There's also a special discount for SoundCloud users. Get it here

Flavors lets you create a stylish artist or band website in literally less than 5 minutes and aggregates your different social profiles into one place on the web, customized by ... You. To learn how to set up your own Flavors page, read more about the magic in our recent blog post. Check it out

Mixlr is a nifty little desktop app that makes it easy to stream live audio from your gig, jam session, or whatever sound creation you're working on. Streams are recorded and can easily be saved to your SoundCloud account so that you can also share them to the people who missed the live show. Mixlr is still in beta but SoundCloud users can sign up with the code "SOUNDCLOUD". Sign up here

  • SoundCloud User Meetups: Easier organization thanks to Meetup.com

After the success of our previous meetups, we're shifting it up a gear! Thanks to the lovely folks at Meetup.com, it's now much easier to get in touch with other users in your area, and spread the word about your meetups. Have a look at our new Meetups page to learn how easy it is to RSVP or organize a meetup. To kick things off, we're planning a global Soundcloud meetup day on Thursday July 29th. Massive, be part of it.

  • Users of the month: SoundCloud spotted

Our friends at Retronyms asked some of their favorite artists to create tracks with the DopplerPad iPhone app. The result was uploaded to SoundCloud and showcased with an artwork widget on this stylish page. We're really excited to see such nice music created with an iPhone app and hope to see direct export from DopplerPad to SoundCloud in an upcoming version.

Zero 7, Fanfarlo and none other than Kylie Minogue are all sporting SoundCloud players on their websites now. Plus we've seen some awesome music uploaded by the likes of Wichita Recordings , Pantha Du Prince, Epitaph Records, HEALTH and DJ Krust.

RootMusic's Band Page remains one of the most popular apps with all of you. Here are our picks of the month, check out nicely customized Band Pages by Mindflow, Audrey Napoleon, Strange Republik, Drake or We The Kings.

  • Get involved! Remix and production contests

Mark Knight and Toolroom Records have teamed up with Beatport to launch a fresh and exciting co-production contest. Check out their video and get further info here.

And if you've still got time left for some remixing then don't miss the GreenShoelace remix comp with Steve Aoki’s Dim Mak Records, judges include Klever, Peanut Butter Wolf, Flosstradamus and Jazy Jeff. If that's not enough, other highlights include remix comps from Marco Bailey, Kele , Two Door Cinema Club and even some Vuvuzela action. So there really is something for everyone...
